Side spin is done to spin the cue ball either right or left after hitting an object ball (hitting it more right causes the cue ball to spin right, hitting it more left will cause the cue ball to spin more left). It is done by hitting the right or left part of the cue ball; it can be hit at the right, left, top right, or top left, bottom right, bottom left depending on how you want the cue ball to spin. The amount of power matters in how much you want the cue ball to travel while spinning. The width in which you hit the cue ball at however determines how much spin will be put on the ball, this means the farther from center = more spin,

closer to center = less spin.
